eXtension’s MFLN Personal Finance Hosts Virtual Learning Event, June 3-5

The Military Families Learning Network Personal Finance team will host a 3-day interactive virtual event June 3-5, 2014 on Money Behavior: How People Make Financial Decisions.

“The virtual learning event is something new and different. It is akin to a ‘track’ at a face-to-face conference where a number of related webinars are grouped together around a common theme. The theme of all of the virtual learning event webinars is to explore factors that affect financial behavior from a variety of perspectives,” said Barbara O’Neill, Rutgers University Extension personal finance specialist.

The event will include three 2-hour webinars and one 90-minute panel discussion. AFC-credentialed participants of the entire event will be eligible to earn 7.5 free CEUs.

“We will go beyond basic technical aspects of personal finance and learn more about why people have certain financial habits, where they come from, and how they can help or hinder financial success. Understanding why certain behaviors are the way they are is key to helping individuals and families to address these and move towards positive financial practices,” said Michael Gutter, Associate Professor and Family Economics State Specialist, University of Florida.

The speakers for this 3-day session will focus on the psychology of finance and the process behind the decisions we make that impact our financial actions. The schedule includes:
Mental Health and Financial Management with presenter Dr. Lois Vitt on Tuesday, June 3 at 11 a.m. ET. This 120-minute session (including 30 minute Q&A) is worth 2 AFC CEUs
Heuristics, Anchoring, Narrowing Choice with presenter Dr. Michael Gutter on Wednesday, June 4 at 11 a.m. ET. This 120-minute session (including 30 minute Q&A) is worth 2 AFC CEUs
Culture of Personal Finance with presenter Dr. Barbara O’Neill on Thursday, June 5 at 11 a.m. ET. This 120-minute session (including 30 minute Q&A) is worth 2 AFC CEUs
Panel Discussion: What Young Adults Need to Know About Money on Thursday, June 5 at 1:30 p.m. ET. This 90-minute session is worth 1.5 CEUs

“I hope participants that are new to our webinars will join the virtual learning event and enrich the network by providing their expertise and comments. I hope this is an opportunity for our network to really grow,” said Gutter.
