What is the change you are designing to achieve?

The change we are designing is coordinating professional development pathways for individuals interested in sustainable and resilient food systems that improve access to a vetted set of existing programming, tools and resources in an individualized, affordable, and flexible way.

How will you measure that change?

We are measuring change through quantitative and qualitative metrics including career advancement; job security and satisfaction; and employee retention and diversity.

What is the innovative component or strategy you will implement as a result of the design-a-thon?

Our innovation is fostering strategic relationships among existing food systems development training programs through the use of state of the art social networking technology and educational delivery techniques.

How did the design-a-thon help you?

By challenging, encouraging, and informing us with regard to project design, our team was able to map our concept, and get additional tips and tools from experienced professionals.

The Food Systems Development Certification Team, composed of community and university-based Extension and other educators inside and outside Extension, is creating a self-paced, competencies-based training and certification program designed to support US and Canadian individuals working on local and regional food systems, including (but not limited to) increasing sustainability in farming, and innovative value chains, to food security, health, and community and individual wellbeing.
