What is the change you are designing to achieve?Produce growers in Kansas and Missouri will improve their on-farm food safety practices and will be able to meet regulatory requirements. How will you measure that change? We will record the number of farmers receiving certification of their FSMA regulatory training and will survey growers attending trainings 3-6 months after the training to ascertain changes in their produce safety practices. What is the innovative component or strategy you will implement as a result of the design-a-thon?Have training participants send us photos of some of their on-farm food safety improvements as part of evaluation to document impact. How did the design-a-thon help you?It helped me think through aspects of my project and in particular, gave some good ideas for evaluation strategies. |
Summary:We are developing and adapting resources and training courses that will assist small scale produce growers in Kansas and Missouri to meet the requirements of the new FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, as well as increasingly strict food safety requirements of produce buyers. This project will help protect consumers from foodborne illness from produce grown in Kansas and Missouri and will also help small scale farmers meet regulatory and marketplace requirements, thus strengthening their business. I work for both Kansas State University and the University of Missouri so can easily work with stakeholders in both states. |
