What is the change you are designing to achieve?

More urban adults and youth will get involved in food production.

How will you measure that change?

I will measure the change by assessing understanding and intent to adopt what was learned at the end of each course module. I will also challenge (with contests/rewards) course participants to share their successes, failures, and next-step questions on a course Facebook page.

What is the innovative component or strategy you will implement as a result of the design-a-thon?

As a result of discussions at the design-a-thon, I will assess learning at the end of each module, not just at the end of the course. I will also create a competitive environment on Facebook to encourage participation. And I will use Storyline to create interactive lessons that allow participants to start where they are, rather than make them cover info they already understand.

How did the design-a-thon help you?

This experience helped me improve my project by sharing ideas with similar-minded colleagues and receiving their feedback on my project as well as taking ideas from their proposal. I also benefitted by learning about new technologies and best practices from the key informants.


The Nebraska Urban Food Production online course will give backyard and community gardeners in Nebraska the information they need to grow and raise more food within city limits. The fee-based course will walk participants through the basics of growing and raising food in an urban setting, including everything from site evaluation and considerations of zoning regulations to harvest and handling of fresh produce. The course will provide reliable, easy-to-understand, science-based recommendations tailored to Nebraska growing conditions through interactive lessons, short video demonstrations, and links to available web resources.
