What is the change you are designing to achieve?

The goal of Rethink Your Drink is to reduce consumption of sugar sweetened drinks through a combination of environmental and educational strategies.

How will you measure that change?

I will measure the impacts of the program through the RE-AIM framework, which evaluates reach, efficacy, adoption, implementation, and maintenance.

What is the innovative component or strategy you will implement as a result of the design-a-thon?

I will contact additional stakeholders, research additional strategies to improve vending machine offerings, and use a community based participatory research approach to engage the community.

How did the design-a-thon help you?

I did pick up some additional ideas for my project and enjoyed meeting other nutrition educators and learning about their work.

Summary:

My iThree Corps project is Rethink Your Drink, an evidence-based program designed to reduce sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) intake.

infused water
Infused water is a healthy alternative to SSBs!

The program includes both an educational component and environmental change strategies, since research shows that addressing multiple levels of influence increases program effectiveness. (Check out the Social Ecological Model!) So instead of simply educating people to drink less SSBs, we also change the environment to make it easy to do so.

The educational component is pretty straightforward and easy to accomplish. I teach the Rethink Your Drink lesson to children and adults through my community partners. But the environmental component has been more challenging.
