i-Three Issue Corps 2016 – Virtual Demonstration Network of Agricultural Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies in the Northeast

Update:

Leadership within the Hub expressed an interest to really go “virtual” and suggested we investigate 360 degree panoramic photography and online platforms that can support those images/files.  Shane Bradt has been very helpful answering my many questions about story mapping and we’ve decided to go for an ESRI story map.

What is the change you are designing to achieve?

Working first with Extension professionals and then the clientele we reach, we hope to increase knowledge of and change attitudes toward using climate adaptation and mitigation strategies on agriculture and forest lands in the northeast region.

How will you measure that change?

We will assess our impact using several approaches. First, we will pilot the new tool with a select group of Extension professionals and request their feedback on the tool itself and what they learned and if it changed their opinion toward promoting climate change practices. Second, once the tool has been fully rolled out, we plan to assess users with a survey that they can voluntarily complete upon leaving the site. Finally, we will encourage those within the Northeast Climate Hub University Network to feature the virtual demonstration network during face to face meetings with clientele and ask them to complete an online survey as well.

What is the innovative component or strategy you will implement as a result of the design-a-thon?

Through the design-a-thon work, I was able to more fully develop the evaluation strategy described above.

How did the design-a-thon help you?

This was a great opportunity to network with others working in similar fields and on similar projects. I made a lot of great connections that will likely be a great benefit in the coming months ahead.

Summary:

Working with the USDA Northeast Climate Hub University Partners Network, I will develop a network of field demonstration sites to showcase agricultural climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies currently in place across our region. This network will be displayed using a web based story mapping tool that will include background information and multimedia content on practices and systems. This tool will virtually demonstrate effective climate change adaptation and mitigation mitigation strategies to Extension colleagues throughout the Northeast and the agriculture and forestland clientele that we reach.
